… Gareth thought his heart might stop right then and there. He sputtered, “Surely I’ve… misheard you? You’re joking. You didn’t just say demonic possession?”

“That is what I said,” the medic growled. “And I also warned that you would not like it. But would you like me to explain?”

Since it had already been made clear that this was his only option, Gareth nodded in agreement, reluctantly. The old goblin medic waited a moment, her face unreadable, before continuing.

“Summoning a demon requires three things: intent, host, and contract. In that order. Intent is easy. It simply means you cannot summon a demon by accident. You must know that you are summoning a demon. And I do. I have done it before. The host… that is where you will become involved.”

She waited patiently for Gareth to react, but his mouth was now too dry to protest.

“Often, demons are summoned in the whole body. Those are the fiends you see going around and causing trouble, now and then. But I have experience in limiting the host offering. It can be done, as long as the exchange is made clear to the demon. Look.” The medic turned around and barked some unknown phrase out into the wulpit. A second later there was a scampering of tiny feet, and Gareth once again saw the vermin-shadow he’d seen before. … [cont.]
